The Family is the central creative unit of any grassroots intentional community. This is because all living organisms are engaged in the process of using and producing energy. This is the biology of being. A healthy, balanced individual consumes amounts equal to or less than that which (s)he can produce. The same is true of a healthy couple, a healthy family, a healthy tribe, and so on ever-expansively out to the level of the world. All balance is ensured by flow, which is maintained by giving and receiving. It is in giving and receiving that we escape the lonely limits of the individual experience. The satisfaction of being human is in emerging from individuality and experiencing connection to others. This is what is meant by unity consciousness. Unity consciousness is a name for the shift in consciousness that allows humans to locate ourselves within the fulfillment of our interconnectedness, rather than within the suffering of our individual experience of separation. This is why we are given love and sex, pregnancy and birth, pores, lungs, and thoughts. We are made for penetrating and being penetrated. We are made for giving and receiving.
Whereas romantic partnership is the training ground for the experience of sublime connection, the family is intelligently designed to be the mechanism of production. This ensures the resilience of society. A healthy, functioning family that operates like a well-oiled machine to see to its own wellbeing (and is interconnected with other families to see to the wellbeing of the clan, and so on and so forth) is what I mean by a sovereign family.
Each family member has an accountability, or a part to play in the smooth operation of the family unit. It is a role, a duty, an aspect of the whole for which one is responsible. Most importantly, it is a gift--a sacred gift for the giving. Sacred because it alludes to, insinuates, intimates, captures, resonates with, and has the flavor of, the divine; the flavor of Eden; the utopic scent of what is actually possible for a healed and whole body of humans upon planet earth; a new Eden--NeoEden.
When we are born into a family, we experience receiving the gifts of each of the other family members. The newborn is the focus of everyone, and the receiver of each of the individual gifts given by each giver. The newborn has a unique learned experience inside of each of her relationships; and also the experience of the gift that is the whole, loving family unit. We experience all of the aspects of that which we need (bits of heaven) in the relationships of the family. In healing the family, we lay the framework within the infant for the healing of the world.
One of the most powerful actions a sovereign family can take is to create a family vision statement. This provides an energetic framework to contain the development of the child, a source for the needed mutual surrender of the adults (and teens!), and a direction for concentrated action.
